At least one person was killed, and several others were stabbed Tuesday during a “violent attack” at a vocational school in Finland’s Northern Savonia region, police said.
Authorities received a call about the bloody incident around 12:30 p.m. local time and responded to the Herman shopping center in Kuopio, which houses the Savo Vocational College.
A total of ten people were injured amid the attack, including the suspect.
“Police used firearms in the situation,” the East Finland Police Department said in a statement. “The suspect has been arrested. 10 people have been injured and taken to the hospital and one person has died.”
Two of those injured – including the suspect – were in serious condition, according to authorities.

BACK TO SLIDE
It’s not clear what type of blade was used in the attack, but several witnesses told local media outlets that it appeared to be a large knife or sword.
Police confirmed the suspect, who has only been identified as a male Finnish citizen, was also carrying gun during the deadly attack.
“The violence at Savo Vocational College in Kuopio is shocking and completely unacceptable,” Finnish Prime Minister Antti Rinne said on Twitter.
“I have spoken with the Director General of Police and the government is monitoring the situation closely. On behalf of myself and the entire Government, I extend my condolences to all the relatives.”
The incident marks the third attack to occur inside a Finnish school in the last 12 years.
The first took place in 2007, when a student at Jokela High School gunned down eight people before turning the weapon on himself, according to the Independent. A year later, a 22-year-old vocational student fatally shot 10 people in Kauhajoki before killing himself.
Authorities said Tuesday they do not believe there is an active threat to the community.
